Canberra’s own indie pop force, Aaron Mackenzie, recently sat down with a roundtable of local content creators to clear the air, debunk a few internet myths, and drop some major exclusives about his upcoming visual projects. From music video casting calls to setting the record straight on his digital identity, here is everything you need to know from our chat with the singer-songwriter.
On Personal Life & Identity
Q: Let’s start with the basics. There have been a lot of questions online about your personal life and how you identify.
Aaron Mackenzie: Yes, I am gay, and my pronouns are they/them/theirs. As for the relationship status? I don't have a boyfriend currently. I have dated in the past, but honestly, it wasn't great. Right now, the focus is heavily on the music.
On Upcoming Music Videos & Casting
Q: Visuals are a massive part of your artistry. Can we expect new videos soon?
Aaron: Absolutely. There will definitely be music videos coming for Before The Sirens, The Blue Eclipse, and Supernova Disaster.
Q: Are the concepts locked in yet? Where are you shooting?
Aaron: The locations for The Blue Eclipse and Supernova Disaster music videos are actually not confirmed just yet. We are still scouting, We potentially are thinking of a forest, Im just waiting for my videographer, Gunther to respond.
Q: We heard a rumor that you're looking for local talent to get involved. Is that true?
Aaron: Yes! I am completely open to collaborating with Canberra creators, influencers, or even just a few local teens to star in an upcoming music video. If you're interested, my DMs are open, or you can pitch directly to my team at [email protected].
On Identity Crises & Internet Imposters
Q: If you search your name online, a few different profiles pop up. Are you secretively a multi-talented athlete or actor?
Aaron: (Laughs) No, I am not an ice hockey player from Canada, nor am I an actor/director, (laughs) If you want to find the real me on Google, make sure you search for Aaron Mackenzie (Canberra Singer-Songwriter) or even search one of my albums.
Q: Speaking of online presence, how can fans make sure they are interacting with the official you?
Aaron: This is important: I will NEVER go by "Aaron M" on socials. If you see someone using that handle pretending to be me, it's a fake account. Please remember that my official email is [email protected], and my verified accounts will always feature a profile picture that is the same or highly similar across all platforms—usually tied to the artwork for Revolution I, The Blue Eclipse and Supernova Disaster!
On Upcoming Projects & Events
Q: What is the status of The Midnight Parameters? Fans are eager for updates.
Aaron: It is officially on its way! I’m working on it in collaboration with WackyStudios13, so definitely keep an eye out for that.
Q: Finally, will we see the return of the AMR Festival anytime soon?
Aaron: Unfortunately, no. The AMR Festival is no longer being held because our videographer is unavailable to work on it anymore. It’s a bumber, but it just means we are redirecting all that creative energy straight into the upcoming music videos.
WANT TO STAR IN A MUSIC VIDEO?
Aaron Mackenzie is currently casting for his next projects. Canberra-based creators, influencers, and teens can apply by sliding into his DMs or emailing [email protected]. For official updates, search Aaron Mackenzie (Canberra Singer-Songwriter) on Google, MusicBrainz, and Wikidata.
Q: Let’s shift focus to the music itself. You’ve been incredibly prolific, but a lot of independent artists are moving strictly to streaming. Why was it important for you to release a physical CD for Just Getting Together?
Aaron Mackenzie: There is something entirely different about holding music in your hands. When we opened up the CD pre-sales for Just Getting Together, it was about giving the listeners something tangible. That EP features tracks like Gateway to Progress, Just Not The Same, Coming to Thirteen, and the title track itself. Having it produced through platforms like elasticStage allows an independent artist like me to offer high-quality physical releases without needing a major label budget.
Q: You also dropped a major announcement regarding a eighth album, revolution I. The title sounds like a distinct nod to your roots.
Aaron: It absolutely is. Revolution I represents a massive milestone for me as my eighth studio album under Aaron Mackenzie Records. The title track really sets the tone for the record. Living and creating music in Canberra shapes your perspective, and this album leans into that unique environment. Also about my family dynamics and everything.
Q: With so many projects dropping at once—from Before The Sirens to The Blue Eclipse—how do you balance the sonic identity of each release?
Aaron: It’s all about distinct eras. Each project has its own visual identity and mood, which is why I’m so protective of the cover art and imagery across my platforms. Whether it's the electronic-pop energy of Just Getting Together or the cinematic visuals we are planning for Supernova Disaster, I want the audience to feel like they are stepping into a completely new chapter every time they hit play.
